The Wood Floor Refinishing Process

If scratches or dings are in the hardwood, sanding and refinishing is the first step.

If there is enough wood material, your floors are ready for sanding. Each sanding removes another layer of hardwood. Make sure your boards are thick enough to be refinished – at least 1/8″ or wood above the tongue & groove needs to be available. Check at floor edges or around a heat register to see how much wood remains. Also, there may be gaps that have developed over time that need filling before beginning. Your Floor Master representative is always happy to help you with any questions.

There are times when sanding and refinishing hardwood floors isn’t enough and whole boards need to be replaced or repaired. If the wood floor feels spongy, if it sags, or if boards are cupping, buckling or warped, then they probably need replacing.

Note: Solid hardwood floors can be sanded and refinished more times than engineered floors.
